Missouri Governor Signs Bill to Fund Human Cloning
And Embryonic Stem Cell Research

The following statement can be attributed to Pam Fichter, President Missouri Right to Life:

Missouri Right to Life is profoundly disappointed in the action of Governor Jay Nixon who today signed into law SB 7, the Missouri Science Innovation and Reinvestment Act (MOSIRA).

MOSIRA sets up a fund, channeled through the state budget, to be administered by the pro-cloning Missouri Technology Corporation, to provide state money and/or tax incentives for new technology businesses, including businesses engaged in human life sciences research.

Missouri Right to Life sought to add language to this legislation that would effectively prevent any MOSIRA funds from being used for unethical research. Sadly, neither the Missouri Legislature nor Governor Nixon valued the concerns of pro-life Missourians who have always opposed public funding for human cloning or embryonic stem cell research.

Abortions to Resume in Columbia, MO This Week

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that after 16 weeks without abortions, the Planned Parenthood in Columbia, MO has found an abortion doctor who will start work there this Thursday, May 26. The Columbia Planned Parenthood represents one of only two abortion clinics here in Missouri, so the need for prayers and action as they attempt to resume this deadly practice is critical.

40 Days for Life of Columbia is asking all pro-lifers to please check your calendars, call your friends, bring your children and come to pray on the sidewalk this Thursday, May 26 anytime after 1:00pm. They expect to be there until 7:30 pm or later. As many as 15 women are expected to show up for abortions at this time.

The other bad news is that this new doctor will abort babies up to 13 weeks. This means surgical abortions, which have not been committed here since last summer. God has been listening to our prayers and we are praying for another miracle. We pray for the conversion of this doctor who will become an abortionist on May 26.

Planned Parenthood in Columbia is located at 711 N Providence Road. If you are able to come on Thursday, please send an email with ‘count me in’ in the subject line to columbia40daysforlife2@gmail.com. Of course, there can never be too many prayer supporters, so if you can not make it, please take a few minutes out of your Thursday afternoon to pause and pray for these women, children and especially for the abortionist!

National Catholic Register Highlights New MO Abortion Law

Earlier this year, Missouri lawmakers passed a bill expanding the state’s current Women’s Right to Know law. Among other things, the new bill required that women be given the opportunity to see an ultrasound of their unborn child and that abortion facilities tell women that abortion ends the life of a “separate, unique, living human being.” Though he didn’t actually sign the bill, Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon withheld his veto and allowed the bill to become law.

Yesterday, the National Catholic Reporter did a story highlighting this new law and what could be the next step in Missouri’s efforts to protect the lives of our most vulnerable citizens. It’s a good piece, worth a read, with quotes from MRL’s own legislative liaison, Susan Klein, but I do want to make one minor correction. Like most of the articles I’ve seen about the new law, it implies that this is the first time the State of Missouri has recognized human life as beginning at the moment of conception. In fact, Missouri Statute has defined human life as beginning at conception for over 20 years (1.205, RSMo, below) the new law just requires that this information be given to pregnant women seeing an abortion.

Life begins at conception–unborn child, defined–failure to provide prenatal care, no cause of action for.
1.205. 1. The general assembly of this state finds that:

(1) The life of each human being begins at conception;

(2) Unborn children have protectable interests in life, health, and well-being;

(3) The natural parents of unborn children have protectable interests in the life, health, and well-being of their unborn child.

2. Effective January 1, 1988, the laws of this state shall be interpreted and construed to acknowledge on behalf of the unborn child at every stage of development, all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to other persons, citizens, and residents of this state, subject only to the Constitution of the United States, and decisional interpretations thereof by the United States Supreme Court and specific provisions to the contrary in the statutes and constitution of this state.

3. As used in this section, the term “unborn children” or “unborn child” shall include all unborn child or children or the offspring of human beings from the moment of conception until birth at every stage of biological development.

4. Nothing in this section shall be interpreted as creating a cause of action against a woman for indirectly harming her unborn child by failing to properly care for herself or by failing to follow any particular program of prenatal care.

The act that created this section was passed in 1986. The Supreme Court refused to rule it unconstitutional in 1989 (Webster v. Reproductive Health Services). Although, the Court did not find it constitutional either; it ruled that since abortion was not affected, it did not have to rule on it.

Missouri Temporarily Down to Just One Two Abortion Facilities!

**9/7/10 Correction: St. Louis has TWO active abortion facilities: see this post for more.**

It’s been speculated for a while, but now the president of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri has finally confirmed it:

COLUMBIA — Planned Parenthood’s Columbia clinic has temporarily suspended its abortion services due to “scheduling issues,” leaving a St. Louis center as the only functioning abortion clinic in the state.

The Columbia clinic halted its abortion services two weeks ago, said Peter Brownlie, president of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri. Brownlie said he doesn’t expect the stoppage to be “lengthy,” but couldn’t say when Columbia’s abortion services will resume.

Of course that’s still one abortion facility too many, but this is EXCELLENT news, nonetheless.
40 Days for Life

For over a year now there has been a regular, weekly, prayerful presence outside this abortion facility as well as two successful daily 40 Days for Life campaigns. According to Kathy Forck, the director of these prayer vigils, no abortions have been done at the Columbia Planned Parenthood since August 9! Now we know why. And praise God for that! Any time an abortion facility has to “suspend” the killing of innocent human beings, even for a short time, it’s a good thing. Not only does it mean that fewer babies are being killed (though some women surely will be convinced to drive an extra couple hundred miles for their abortions), but it means lost revenue for Planned Parenthood. As a for-profit business that makes it’s money on the murder of innocent human beings and, when it’s not doing that, on promoting the sex crazed culture that accepts the murder of innocent human beings, any dip in their profits, for whatever reason, is a giant plus in my book. Now if they would just permanently close their doors altogether!
40 Days for Life

Since they started coming to this facility, sidewalk counselors and spiritual supporters have helped save many lives and change many hearts. Up till now their “off-season” (non 40 Days for Life) vigils at this PP have been limited to the one day of the week when abortions were actually taking place inside. But, even though they are not committing abortions now, Kathy assures me that the weekly pro-life presence there will continue as long as women are still going in for pregnancy tests and possible abortion referrals – not to mention the deadly “morning after pill.”

With the fall 40 Days for Life campaign just around the corner (Sept. 22!), they will be looking for more volunteers to come help them keep peaceful vigil daily. If you are in the Columbia/Jeff City MO area find out how you can help here. There is also a campaign in St. Louis or you can find a location near you.

News, Articles and Important Updates from MRL Newsletter

The Missouri Right to Life February newsletter is now available online. A few highlights:

    Ultrasounds Save Lives, Protect Women
    (Page 1)

Missouri is a state that has some of the most wonderful pro-life resources in the nation. Counted among them are over sixty pregnancy resource centers that provide multiple services to women in crisis pregnancy situations who are feeling unsure, scared, pressured, or alone. And significant among those are the ones that offer ultrasound services to these women. Article on front page of linked document below.

    Pro-Life Action Day
    (Page 4)

In the ongoing struggle to give women a real “choice,” the use of ultrasound helps ensure that mothers in crisis pregnancies make truly informed decisions. Several states have laws requiring an abortion provider to give a mother an opportunity to view an ultrasound prior to undergoing an abortion. The women of Missouri deserve the same care. Flyer on page 4 of linked document below.

Stand Up for Life Student Action Day
    (Page 5)

At the upcoming legislative action day, on March 30th, we will also be conducting a workshop for high school students. This is an opportunity for students to learn more about the legislative process in their state capitol, put their faith into citizen action and learn about the pro-life issue.

National Cancer Institute researcher reverses position, finally admits abortion raises breast cancer risk
    (Page 8 )

An April 2009 study by Jessica Dolle et al. of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center examining the relationship between oral contraceptives (OCs) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in women under age 45 contained an admission from U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) researcher Louise Brinton and her colleagues (including Janet Daling) that abortion raises breast cancer risk by 40%. Proceed Cautiously When Funding New Technologies
Definitions can help protect life or can promote unethical practices
    David Prentice, Ph.D.
    (Page 9)

Science and technology keep bringing us exciting new discoveries. Hardly a
day goes by without a news story of the latest breakthrough, and promises of
wonderful outcomes. But when funding initiatives in science and technology, taxpayers need to pay attention to how new technologies are defined, and whether protections for all human life are incorporated.

Columbia 40 Days for Life in the News

This is Kathy Fork (with her granddaughter) who is in charge of the 40 Days for Life campaign in Columbia, MO. She really began this whole thing back in February with her husband and a few others who call themselves Mid-Missourians for Life. Her passion for saving lives and the compassionate way she ministers to women considering abortion is a beautiful sight to behold:
40 Days for Life

Yesterday the Columbia Tribune caught up with Kathy and some of the other Columbia vigil pray-ers:

Kathy Forck wants to be clear about the purpose of the people praying along the sidewalk outside Planned Parenthood at 711 N. Providence Road.

“We’re pro-life,” she said Monday afternoon as spotty drizzle fell during a chilly breeze. “We’re for everyone. We’re not ‘anti-abortion activists.’ ”

Since the middle of September, after launching 40 Days for Life at the Columbia First Assembly of God, a group of six volunteers has grown to 200 volunteers enduring all sorts of weather in shifts for a 7 a.m.-to-7 p.m. prayer vigil in front of Planned Parenthood. Mid-Missourians for Life sponsors the local event, which is coordinated with a nationwide effort that began in 2004. The length of the vigil — 40 days — is symbolic of many significant events recorded in the Bible, organizers said.

Some motorists have honked — giving a thumbs up of support — while others have made not-so-friendly hand gestures. But most interactions have been positive, said 19-year-old Dakota Hoard, who kept vigil by walking slowly back and forth on the sidewalk softly uttering a prayer while holding rosary beads.

The 40 Days for Life vigil and period of fasting for some ends Sunday, but Forck said she and many volunteers will continue to be on the sidewalk, praying every Thursday.

That’s the day the local facility provides abortions, she said. The Columbia clinic performs 15 to 20 abortions every Thursday, Forck said, explaining that three women had told her that the group’s presence recently dissuaded them from terminating their pregnancies

“We’re praying for the end of abortion,” Forck said. “God has the power to do it, so we are asking God to move in his infinite wisdom to touch the hearts of men and women here who are in such desperate straits.”

Tracey Weaver, a 40-year-old nondenominational pastor from Fulton, recalled having an abortion 20 years ago in Madison, Wis. She called it “the worst decision of my life.”

“They told me this was the best decision I would make and this was my choice,” Weaver said, beginning to fight back tears.

“But my baby never had a choice.”

Weaver, who now has three children, said she still suffers severe pain and depression from the decision she made two decades ago.

“Even today I am still healing,” she said. “I’m not here to judge anyone. I’m here to peacefully pray and maybe if God allows me to tell someone, ‘There’s a better way.’ That’s basically why I’m here.”

Kirksville Planned Parenthood to Close This November

PPGood News!

KIRKSVILLE, MO. — Planned Parenthood in Kirksville will be closing for good on November 14th.

The health center, specialized in treating low-income women, has been in Kirksville for 38 years.

Officials say they’re closing because of fewer clients and a shortage of rural nurse practitioners.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider. Even those clinics which do not perform abortions, like the one in Kirksville, make abortion referrals and distribute the morning after pill, which can act as an abortifacient.

Emily’s List Backs Carnahan for U.S. Senate

Emily’s List, which only supports pro-abortion candidates who back taxpayer-funded abortions and oppose a ban on partial-birth abortions has announced it’s top 5 candidates for the 2010 elections and Missouri’s Robin Carnahan is one of them. From LifeNews:

In Missouri, pro-abortion Secretary of State Robin Carnahan is hoping to pick up a pro-life Senate seat. She will face another big name in Missouri politics, pro-life Rep. Roy Blunt.

(Emily’s List president Ellen) Malcolm claims Blunt “has stretched the truth about health care to bolster his opposition to reform” by pointing out how the government-run health care bills foster abortion funding.

“This will be one of the highest profile races in the country, and winning won’t be easy – statewide Missouri races often are won or lost by only a handful of votes,” she says.
